How To Help Your Child Keep Cavities Away

September 27, 2021

Are sugary treats and starchy foods are a constant in your little one’s diet? Do you let them get their way if they refuse to brush their teeth or floss? Unless you take your child to a pediatric dentist in Coral Gables, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll notice the tell-tale signs of decay.

Ways To Prevent Cavities in Kids

Make Brushing a Fun Experience!

Brushing teeth for at least two minutes twice a day can help remove plaque and harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay and cavities. This doesn’t have to be a twice-daily battle if you make brushing fun for them.

You can start by allowing them to choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste flavor. To make sure that you can get them to brush for two minutes, try singing along with them to their favorite song.

Teach Them to Floss!

Cavity-causing bacteria like to hide between teeth. Since brushing alone won’t cut it, flossing is the best way to get rid of food particles that get stuck between teeth. Teach and encourage your child to floss at least once a day.

Serve Nutritious and Balanced Meals!

What your child eats or doesn’t eat can significantly affect how their teeth develop. To make sure that they get enough vitamins and minerals from their food, be sure to serve nutritious and balanced meals. It’s best to include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in their regular diet.

Schedule Regular Dental Exams and Cleanings!

Besides getting used to seeing their dentist, regular dental visits help detect and treat oral health issues. Experts recommend bringing your child in for a dental check-up and cleaning every six months.

Ask for Dental Sealants!

Dentists place plastic coatings called dental sealants on the chewing surface of the back teeth. These create a barrier to protect your child’s molars from acid and plaque that cause tooth decay and cavities. Ask the dentist for dental sealants as soon as your little one’s molars erupt.
